Icons of Blues, Jazz, and Rock Play at The Bankhead to Start the 2022-23 Season
Livermore Valley Arts begins its 2022-23 season with star music icons. From blues master Charlie Musselwhite and his stripped-down music that comes from the soul on Saturday, September 17, to “straight-ahead” jazz talents The Brubeck Brothers Quartet on Wednesday, September 21, to the unforgettable arena rock legends themselves Jefferson Starship on Friday, September 23, The Bankhead will be continuing the star of this 15th Anniversary celebration with music concerts covering a range of genres, with something for everyone in the Tri-Valley. All of these performances will be held at the Bankhead Theater in Downtown Livermore, CA.
Thirty-three time Blues Music Award Winner Charlie Musselwhite’s journey through the blues has taken place all over the US, from his birth in Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago, and California. In 1966 at the age of 22, he recorded the landmark “Stand Back!” to rave reviews. A precipitous relocation to San Francisco in 1967, where his album was being played on underground radio, found him welcomed into the counterculture scene around the Fillmore West as an authentic purveyor of the real deal blues. Charlie has been collaborating with the world’s finest artists for many years, including Ben Harper, Cyndi Lauper, Bonnie Raitt, Cat Stevens, etc. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age, as more than 20 albums later, he is at the top of his game.
The Brubeck Brothers have been making music together practically all their lives, and it is both relaxed and expressive. There is nothing out there that comes close to their unique blend of inventiveness. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966, and they’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups, as well as with their father, jazz giant Dave Brubeck, and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet.
Jefferson Starship, “going to the edge for over 40 years,” is one of the successful arena rock groups of the 1970s and ‘80s, earning three platinum and eight gold records, as well as numerous Top 40 singles. While Jefferson Starship continues to tour today, through the band’s lineup and personnel changes over the decades, each of those members have contributed to the magic and alchemy that make Jefferson Starship iconic. Frontman and remaining founding member David Freiberg will light up The Bankhead stage, along with Donny Baldwin, Jude Gold, Cathy Richardson, and Chris Smith.
Tickets for all shows are available online at www.livermorearts.org, by calling (925) 373-6800, or at the box office windows.
