Army Taps Fort Bliss Unit for Deployment to Korea

Mar 27, 2021
by Matthew Cox
The Army has announced that 1st Armored Division soldiers from Fort Bliss, Texas will deploy to Korea this summer.

The 1st Armored's 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team is set to replace the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, which deployed last fall to the peninsula, as part of a regular rotation to support the United States' commitment to the Republic of Korea, according to an Army news release.

"The upcoming rotation will further maintain the ironclad alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea," Col. Jabari Miller, commander of the 3rd ABCT, said. "The Bulldog Brigade is led by an exceptional team and will represent our division and our families in support of our nation's allies in the Pacific."

Maj. Gen. Sean Bernabe, commander of 1st Armored Division, said his unit will "provide a powerful capability to the combatant commander" in the region.

After Oct. 1, Army units deploying on training or real-world missions will no longer deploy with their major combat systems, but instead draw their equipment from war stocks that are prepositioned around the world.

The Army has five prepositioned stocks -- four land-based, one afloat -- of combat vehicles and other large warfighting equipment located around the world, at the ready for a major mission or contingency.

The change to rely more on these stocks is part of the Army's Regionally Aligned Readiness and Modernization Model, or ReARMM. That effort is intended to align combat forces with combatant commands in priority regions such as the Indo-Pacific and Europe.
