TRAVEL & ENTERTAINMENT: Stellar Lineup Announced for 2016 Jazz at The Lesher Center Series

Jazz at the Lesher Center, presented by the Diablo Regional Arts Association, will return with a fifth season of phenomenal jazz performances by a stellar lineup of talented artists. Held in the Margaret Lesher Theatre at the Lesher Center in Walnut Creek, CA. each artist performs two shows at 5pm and 8pm, Saturdays, July 30 – August 27, 2016. Kicking off the series on July 30 is the Geri Allen Quartet. Legendary trumpet/cornet player Warren Vaché follows on August 6 with an all-star group of jazz superstars including Houston Person (tenor sax), Nicki Parrott (bass/vocals), Tardo Hammer (piano) and Leroy Williams (drums). The legendary Cuban trumpet player Arturo Sandoval will continue the series August 20, and violinist Mark O’Connor will headline the closing concert on August 27.

Geri Allen Quartet – Sat., July 30, 5pm & 8pm -- Celebrated pianist Geri Allen is pianist/composer/educator, Guggenheim Fellow and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She received the very first Lady of Soul Award for jazz, and was also the first woman, and youngest person to receive the Danish "Jazz Par Prize." Her work is featured in The Lisa Gay Hamilton Peabody Award winning film, “Beah: A Black Woman Speaks,” and on Andy Bey's Grammy nominated “American Song.” Her group for this performance will feature alto sax legend and Grammy nominee John Handy.

Warren Vaché Quintet – Sat., Aug. 6, 5pm & 8pm -- A trumpet/cornet player, Warren Vaché is a supremely accomplished, versatile and rare performer. He has been astounding audiences worldwide for decades with his superb cornet, trumpet and flugelhorn stylings. Through live performances and recordings, along with stage, screen, radio and television appearances, Warren conveys incredible warmth through his burnished tone and intelligent improvisations.

Vaché has performed and recorded with such luminaries as Benny Goodman, Rosemary Clooney, Benny Carter, Hank Jones, Gerry Mulligan, Woody Herman, Ruby Braff and Bobby Short to name a few.

The all-star group featured on his celebrated record “The Warren Vaché Quintet Remembers Benny Carter” will perform at this engagement: Houston Person (tenor sax), Nicki Parrott (bass/vocals), Tardo Hammer (piano) and Leroy Williams (drums).

Arturo Sandoval – Sat., Aug. 20, 5pm & 8pm -- A musician of epic proportions, Arturo Sandoval is the protege of jazz trumpeter/one of Latin jazz's musical founders, Dizzy Gillespie. A master of the trumpet and flugelhorn, Sandoval has been recording for over 30 years.

This legendary Cuban trumpet player has won four Grammys, six Billboard Awards and an Emmy (for the score of an HBO movie based on his own life). He has played at the Academy Awards with Celine Dion, the Grammy Awards with Justin Timberlake, and the Super Bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle.

Mark O’Connor’s Hot Swing – Sat., Aug. 27, 5pm & 8pm -- With more than two million records sold, Grammy Award-winning violinist Mark O'Connor collaborates with artists ranging from Bela Fleck to Itzhak Perlman, from Wynton Marsalis to Yo-Yo Ma, and has been called, “One of the most talented and imaginative artists working in music—any music—today”. His quintet, including guitarist Frank Vignola, two violins, bass, and vocalist, whips up an exhilarating brew of pure acoustic jazz.

Jazz at the Lesher Center is produced by Diablo Regional Arts Association (DRAA).
